Nursing in General Practice
Hi, Subscriber Tuesday 24 January 2012
From the Principal Network Adviser, Lynne Walker

Happy New Year to you all and welcome to what promises to be a very busy 2012. There is a lot happening in the world of general practice and I look forward to the challenging year ahead. The work that the AGPN Nursing in General Practice Program will undertake in 2012 will build on that which has been accomplished in the past as well as expand the knowledge and resources to support Divisions and Medicare Locals to support the nursing role in primary care and general practice. A range of resources are in development and we look forward to promoting these in the coming months. It is pleasing to be able to commend three nurses who have shown outstanding leadership to their profession and colleagues.

Congratulations to Jane Butcher the Western Australian General Practice Network Nursing in General Practice program Coordinator on her appointment to the Board of the Australian Practice Nurses Association. This is a reflection of the experience that Jane has in the sector and her commitment to progressing the role of nurses in this context.

What we hope will be the first of many, a practice nurse has been appointed to the Board of the ACT Medicare Local. Naida Fletcher from the Plaza Medical Centre in Woden is also a Surveyor for GPA Accreditation and is now a director on one of the first Medicare Local Boards. Well done Naida.

Congratulations also to Jo Millard the Nursing in General Practice & Immunisation Coordinator at Ballarat and District Division of General Practice for successfully leading an application to secure a $20,000 GSK Adult Immunisation Grant. The grant will be used to implement an innovative Social Media communication strategy targeting adults. The aims of the strategy are to increase adult and community awareness of immunisation benefits and to increase the uptake of adult immunisation in the region.

Projects to support advanced nursing roles

The five projects supporting advanced roles for nurses in general practice have all commenced. All projects are working with a range of university partners from Charles Sturt, Melbourne and Monash as well as the Australian Association of Practice Managers and the Australian Practices Nurses Association. The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute will support all projects and compile the toolkit that will be available to all Medicare Locals at the completion of this project.
Five Network organisations including a Medicare Local, have selected to focus on one of the following areas of development for nurses:
Impetus: Governance
Bayside General Practice Network: Leadership and Management
Dandenong Casey General Practice Association: the role of nurses at the Division and Medicare Local levels
Murrumbidgee Medicare Local: the role of nurses in general practice
Northern Division of General Practice: role of individual nurses in general practice.
Information on these projects can be obtained from Kelly McGorm. Kelly.McGorm@anu.edu.au

PNIP update

Throughout October, November and December AGPN facilitated over 100 workshops nationally to inform Divisions, Medicare Locals and practice staff on the introduction of the PNIP. From 1 January 2012 this streamlined funding has replaced six of the practice nurse MBS item numbers and the previous PIP funding available to rural and remote practices. The PNIP will be available to all accredited general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. To access a February payment, applications for the PNIP need to be received by 31 January 2012. Applications for top up and grandparenting payments close on 30 June 2012. Information and resources, including further workshops on the PNIP are available.
